How to Run a Points-Based Game Night

Why points make game night better

A single game has one winner and a lot of early losers. A points-based game night strings several games together into one championship — everyone stays in it because the overall title is up for grabs until the end. A running leaderboard ties it all together.

Step 1: Pick a mix of games

Choose 4-6 short games that suit your group — a card game, a trivia round, a charades round, a dexterity game. Variety means different people shine in different rounds, keeping everyone engaged.

Step 2: Decide a points system

Award points by finishing position each game (e.g. 10 for 1st, 7 for 2nd, 5 for 3rd, 3 for everyone else). This keeps the overall race close and rewards consistency over one big win.

Step 3: Track a running leaderboard

Put a live leaderboard on the TV and update it after each game. Watching the standings shift between games is half the fun — and it stops anyone checking out early.

Step 4: Add a finale

Make the last game double points so a trailing player or team can still steal the title. A genuine chance of a comeback keeps everyone invested to the final round.

Sample points structure

  • 1st place — 10 pts
  • 2nd place — 7 pts
  • 3rd place — 5 pts
  • Everyone else — 3 pts
  • Final game — double points
