How to Use Leaderboards to Increase Cold Call Activity

Activity is the one thing reps can control

Reps can't control who picks up or who buys — but they can control how many dials they make. Cold call volume is a pure leading indicator: more quality conversations almost always means more pipeline. The problem is that calling is hard and easy to avoid. A leaderboard makes the one controllable number impossible to ignore.

Why a leaderboard moves dial volume

When dials are private, it's easy to make 20 calls and call it a day. When they're live on a screen next to your teammates' numbers, the social pressure is immediate and motivating. Nobody wants to be visibly idle — and seeing a colleague pull ahead is the nudge to pick up the phone again.

Run a power hour

The single most effective tactic: a power hour. Everyone calls at the same time, dials tick up live on the leaderboard, and the energy compounds. To run one:

  1. Pick a 45-60 minute window when the team calls together
  2. Put a live "dials" board on the office TV (or share the link for remote)
  3. Update from your CRM via the API, or have reps log dials as they go
  4. Celebrate the winner — and the most connects — at the end

Track the right call metrics

Raw dials are a fine start, but layer in quality so reps don't just speed-dial voicemails:

  • Dials — volume
  • Connects — reached a human
  • Conversations / meaningful talks — quality
  • Meetings booked — the outcome
