How to Run a Sales Contest That Actually Motivates Your Team

A practical guide for sales managers: how to set up contests that drive revenue, not just activity metrics.

Sales contest leaderboard tracking rep goals and progress

Most sales contests fail

The typical sales contest: announce a prize, track a metric for a month, the same top performer wins, everyone else checks out by week 2. Sound familiar?

Here's how to run contests that actually motivate your entire team - not just the top 10%.

Pick the right metric

Revenue is the obvious choice, but it favors reps with the biggest territories. Consider:

  • Calls made - pure activity, everyone starts at zero
  • Meetings booked - rewards prospecting effort
  • Pipeline generated - measures quality prospecting
  • Improvement over last month - your weakest rep can win this
  • Team-based revenue - pods compete together, reducing sandbagging

Pro tip: Run a 2-week contest with an activity metric (calls, meetings) to build momentum, then a monthly contest on a results metric (revenue, pipeline).

Make the leaderboard visible

Put a live leaderboard on the office TV. When reps walk past and see their name, it triggers competitive instinct. Use BoardQ to set up a real-time scoreboard that auto-refreshes on any screen.

For remote teams: Embed the leaderboard in Slack using an iframe or share a link that everyone can bookmark. Seeing rankings in daily standup drives accountability.

Structure that works

  1. Duration: 2-4 weeks. Any longer and motivation fades.
  2. Announce prizes upfront: 1st, 2nd, 3rd place. Make them worth competing for.
  3. Daily updates: Update the leaderboard at least once per day. Morning standup is the perfect trigger.
  4. Mid-contest boost: Halfway through, offer a bonus prize for "most improved in the second half".
  5. Celebrate loudly: Ring the bell, announce winners in all-hands, post in Slack.

Prize ideas that actually work

  • Extra PTO day - universally loved, costs you nothing in cash
  • Choice of territory/accounts - high performers get first pick next quarter
  • Cash bonus - straightforward, always motivating
  • Experience rewards - nice dinner, spa day, event tickets
  • Team prizes - winning team gets a team lunch or outing
